Filing a Nil Return is the professional equivalent of telling the KRA, "I promise I didn't make any taxable income this year, please don't fine me." For many Kenyan residents or students who are not yet earning, this is a yearly ritual to avoid the dreaded penalty of KES 2,000. It is a quick process, but skipping it can lead to a surprisingly expensive bill later on.
Step 1: Log Into iTax
Start by visiting the KRA iTax portal. You will need your KRA PIN and your password. If you have forgotten your password (it happens to the best of us), use the "Forgot Password" link to have a reset code sent to your registered email. Once you are in, you will be greeted by the dashboard that looks like it is waiting for some very important data—except today, that data is zero.
Step 2: Select the Returns Menu
Hover your cursor over the Returns tab on the top menu and select File Nil Return. This is the shortcut for those who have no income to declare from employment, business, or rental sources.
Step 3: Fill in the Details
You will be prompted to select your "Tax Obligation," which for most individuals is Income Tax - Resident Individual. After that, select the return period. If you are filing for the previous year, ensure the dates cover January 1st to December 31st.
Step 4: Submit and Download
Once you click submit, the system will ask if you are sure. After a deep breath and a click of "Yes," you will receive an acknowledgement receipt. Pro tip: Download and save this receipt. It is your only proof that you fulfilled your civic duty and can avoid those pesky late-filing penalties.
Filing your returns on time is the first step toward a clean financial record, making future applications for things like HELB or job clearances much smoother.
